Harrity Analytics is pleased to announce the release of the 2024 Patent 300® List, our annual ranking of the top patent-producing organizations worldwide. This year's data reveals compelling insights into the technology sectors driving innovation and the companies leading the charge.
Overview
The 2024 Patent 300 List encompasses a total of 312,563 utility patents granted to the top 300 organizations. Notably, the top 15 innovators alone account for approximately 16% of this total—a concentration that underscores the outsized role of major corporations in the patent landscape.
Leading the list is Samsung, which secured 9,036 patents in the most recent year, reinforcing its position as the world's most prolific patent holder.
Electronics & Semiconductors
The electronics and semiconductor sector continues to dominate the patent landscape. Samsung leads this category by a significant margin, with LG, TSMC, and Qualcomm also ranking among the top filers. The strength of this sector reflects the rapid pace of innovation in consumer electronics, mobile communications, chip design, and display technologies.
The continued investment in semiconductor patents is particularly notable given the global focus on supply chain resilience and domestic chip manufacturing capacity.
Cloud, Software & AI
The cloud computing, software, and artificial intelligence sector has seen significant growth in patent activity. IBM remains a perennial leader in this space, while Alphabet (Google's parent company) and Apple have also made substantial contributions. The rise of generative AI and large language models has accelerated patent filings related to machine learning architectures, natural language processing, and AI-driven applications.
Optics, Imaging & Automotive
Canon stands out as a leading innovator in the optics and imaging space, continuing its long history of patent leadership in camera technology, printing systems, and medical imaging. The automotive sector, meanwhile, is seeing increased patent activity driven by electric vehicle development, autonomous driving systems, and connected car technologies.
Aerospace & Defense
Raytheon represents the aerospace and defense sector among the top patent filers, reflecting ongoing investment in advanced defense systems, satellite communications, cybersecurity, and aviation technologies. This sector's patent activity is driven by both government contracts and commercial applications of defense-originated technologies.
