Steven Underwood has more than twenty years of experience in patent law, including patent prosecution, opinions, litigation, and licensing. Steve has prosecuted patent applications related to electrical, software, and mechanical inventions, including medical devices; optics; wired and wireless telephony (including mobile applications and security); data compression and encryption; Internet technologies; and assorted computer-implemented inventions.
Steve began his career at Pennie & Edmonds in New York, at the height of the “dot-com boom” in patent practice, and has prosecuted hundreds of business method patent applications over the past 20 years. In particular, Steve has worked with many different financial services clients to patent their trading technologies, financial products (indexes, options, etc.), and banking services.
Steve’s other experience includes drafting freedom-to-operate, invalidity, and noninfringement opinion letters; drafting and reviewing licensing, employment, and nondisclosure agreements; advising clients and foreign associate firms regarding patenting strategies; and litigation and arbitration relating to electrical and software patents, patent inventorship and ownership, software copyrights, trade secrets, and contract disputes.
