Mike Tonkinson brings over a decade of experience in patent law with a specialized focus on wireless communications, semiconductor devices, software, and the electrical and mechanical arts. His practice at Harrity & Harrity centers on patent counseling, preparation, and prosecution, through which he helps clients strategically build and protect high-value patent portfolios in both domestic and international markets.
Mike has developed a strong track record of working with engineers to safeguard their innovations from idea to implementation. He has deep technical knowledge across a range of complex technologies, including 5G and 6G wireless systems, satellite networks, semiconductor manufacturing, AI/ML, software, and standards-essential technologies. His work with Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) includes procurement, analysis, and the preparation of detailed claim charts aligned with global technology standards, bringing critical insight for clients navigating patent landscapes shaped by standard-setting organizations.
Before joining Harrity, Mike held roles at top IP boutiques and Am Law firms, and served as an adjunct professor of patent drafting and prosecution at the University of Colorado Law School. He also brings significant litigation experience, having represented clients in federal court and before the U.S. Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), including post-grant proceedings such as IPRs and CBMs. This litigation background informs his prosecution approach, with firsthand insight into how patents are challenged and enforced.
Mike earned his J.D. from New York University School of Law, where he served as Articles Editor for the Journal of Law and Business. He also holds a Master’s Degree in Electrical & Computer Engineering from Boston University and a B.A. in Physics from Pomona College.
Fun fact: Mike recently learned how to solve both 2×2 and 3×3 Rubik’s cubes, and is currently working on mastering the 4×4 (with a little help from a cheat sheet for the final steps).
